WHISTLE OF THE FOREST.
The origins of the began with the inspiration of the Short Stacks Short Film Prize sponsored by the State Library of NSW, which allowed filmmakers around the country to make a five-minute film based on one of the five new collections added to their library.
One being a handmade collection of bird whistles; made of metal tubes, wires, and rubber bands that caught the attention of writer Adam Juric. At this period of time of 2020, the Victorian bushfires were rampant in the east, as many were affected by the loss of their homes and family.
Juric wanted to focus his story on the aftermath and impact the bushfires had on those families, tapping into the emotional and psychological pain endured during and after.
Around this time, Juric mentioned this to filmmaker and long-time friend, Jarrek Montenegro, in which both using the competition’s prompts to motivate a story that can radiate for others.
Juric and Montenegro collaborated together to challenge themselves: same cast, same crew, same location, different stories.
Using the beautiful rural town of Rushworth as a blanket location of a town that’s been affected by the dry seasons, Montenegro and Juric were able to complete two short films within a weekend.
The acting performances of the cast give them a new perspective to show their talent and craft, without projecting their emotions verbally, Jonah Garvie and Michael Shanahan had to present a relationship of a father and son without words to convey it.
“Some cases, words can mudder the feelings or true thoughts we have in our mind. If we remove it entirely were left with the primal emotions facing an unpreparing situation. Thats what I wanted to show in Butcherbird, that a lack of words can tell more to an audience than the exposition out of their mouth.“
