Deep down inside, we all long for human connection. A desire to know that people love us for who we are. But what if you couldn't move on from that one connection you know has stopped?
Elijah Ormesher tackles this idea with his first short film outside of film school.
The concept for this film came from a simple encounter that Elijah heard on his car radio. He heard a text from a young woman saying she was surprising her mother and he thought, what if you were the one on the receiving end of that and expected a visit later that day. This text sent Elijah into a spiral of creativity as he explored various ways of expressing this story before finally arriving on 'Mothers Day'.
The design of this film was to create a confusing environment for the audience. The juxtaposition of having an elderly woman in such a modern house, the dressing gown costume of Ellen (played wonderfully by Mara Schiavetti), and the well-manicured suit of Jim (portrayed by the incredible Marty Rhone) as well as the film’s continuity being unorthodox, were all purposefully chosen to create unease within the viewers, putting them into the rocky mental state of the characters. The film’s ending will leave you wondering; do we ever truly move on?
“I had seen a few films in a short space of time that had an affect on me emotionally due to the stubborness of the lead characters. The idea of watching a character knowing that if they followed the path they were on, the consequences would not end well, but they were too determined and adamant in their ways to change that path. I wanted to explore this concept with Mothers Day. This idea that sometimes when we get so fixated on an idea, it can lead us to unhealthy places. I feel that using the desire we all share of human connection allows the audience to more easily connect with the films themes.”
